Session 1: June 9-13

Holiday in the Sun

         Campers will plunge into summertime fun and excitement with activities celebrating family vacations and new found friends.   Literature will include The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant and National Book Award Winner The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall.

Week 2: June 16 - 20

Finding Courage         

            Courage can be found by accident or by answering a call for action.  The week of Juneteenth will find campers exploring concepts of bravery with Scaredy Squirrel by Mélanie Watt, Courage by Bernard Waber, and the heroic tale of runaway slaves in Canada titled Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis.

Week 3: June 23 - 27

Parade of Pets

            The patter of paws and the clop of hooves bring a parade of favorite pets in all shapes and sizes with puppets, masks, and portraits honoring our animal friends.  Literature this week includes   Hi!  Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold, Good Boy, Fergus! by David Shannon and the classic Old Yeller by Fred Gipson.

Week 4: June 30 – July3

Very Canadian!

            Campers will discover our neighbors to the North with activities that reveal Canada ’s symbols and cultural identity from the Mounties to maple syrup.  Good day, eh! Students will read That’s Very Canadian!: An Exceptionally Interesting Report About All things Canadian by Vivien Bowers, and The Boggart by Susan Cooper.

Week 5: July 7 - 11

Alien Invasion!

            Attention!  Extra special extra-terrestrials have landed at our centers in the form of imaginative crafts and mysterious cooking projects, leaving behind a perplexing green slimy substance to be transported through relay races and games.  Before panic breaks out, campers will search for clues with the books The Aliens Are Coming! by Lisa Thiesing, Aliens Are Coming!: The True Account of the 1938 War of the Worlds Radio Broadcast by Meghan McCarthy, and Larklight by Phillip Reeve.

Week 6: July 14 - 18

Willing and Able

            This week campers will explore opportunities for aiding and learning from the physically challenged and mentally complex children who enrich our lives through their unique perspective, courage and strength.  Enlightening and rewarding books to be read this week include  Don’t Call Me Special: A First Look at Disability by Pat Thomas, Clementine by Sara Pennypacker, and Newberry Honor Book Rules by Cynthia Lord.

Weeks 7: July 21 - 25

How the West Was Fun!           

            Howdy partner!  With National Cowboy Day arriving on July 26th it’s time to giddy-up and git-along to Wild West adventures with ropin’ and wranglin’ activities culminating in a playground rodeo and rubber band shootin’ contest.  Highfalutin’ literature will include the books Cindy Ellen: A Wild Western Cinderella by Susan Lowell, The Toughest Cowboy: Or How the West Was Tamed by John Frank, and The Misadventures of Maude Marche: Or Trouble Rides a Fast Horse by Audrey Couloumbis.  

EAC's Summer Bash

The 11 Extend-A-Care for Kids summer camps will all gather at Travis High School from 9 -11 a.m. for an event full of dancing, singing, competing and entertainment to celebrate summer at EAC. The children will walk up to the gym doors with a plethora of very important/enthusiastic people and mascots welcoming them; walk into the gym hearing the sound of a marching band; participate in song and dance; enjoy performances; and then walk away with giveaways. Session 8 - July 28-August 1

Home Away From Home

All U.S. citizens are related to immigrants or are immigrants themselves. From the first Americans thousands of years ago to those who arrived only yesterday, their goal was always the same: a better life for their children. This week activities will celebrate the diversity of a country built by and for a population of immigrants who've sought opportunity in the land of plenty. Literature will include Angel Child, Dragon Child by Michele Maria Surat, Immigrant Kids by Russell Freedman, Coming to America: The Story of Immigration by Betsy Maestro, and The Trouble Begins by Linda Himelblau.

Session 9 - August 4-8

Hidden Talents

Talent wasted is talent lost! Campers will be encouraged to explore their hidden potential, even in the form of parody, as centers revive a performance of an original talent review "Extend-A-Care Idol," complete with sanctimonious judges and hilarious spoofs of catastrophic auditions. Parents are invited to attend the show and enjoy a sample of student-prepared cuisine. Literature will include Houndsley and Catina by James Howe, and Queen Sophie Hartley by Stephanie Greene.

Session 10 - August 11-15

Blast Off! The Exploration of Space


Centers will conclude the summer with an (almost) serious study of astronauts, the solar system, black holes, and the logistics of traveling in outer space. Younger groups will enjoy DK Readers: Astronaut, Living in Space by Kate Hayden, while older campers read George's Secret Key to the Universe written by renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in his first book for young people.
